"It’s all about recharging and taking a moment to breathe"
The pieces by Jess Lei Art feels extremely grounded and certain - colourful, intentional and nostalgic. I can't stop looking at them.
We are so excited to have her at Blank Canvas! This is her story:
Hey, Jess! Thanks for your time today :) Can you introduce yourself to us?
Hey, I'm Jess Lei, a Sydney-born daughter of Chinese immigrants.

Jess Lei Art is a vibrant, evolving reflection of my journey as a self-taught artist. For years, I was comfortable drawing in my sketchbook, but my perspective shifted during the lockdown. I realised art could be more than a personal escape—it could connect and inspire others too!
My goal as an artist is simple: I want my work to resonate with people. To brighten someone’s day and to create connections through shared emotions.
That's amazing, Jess! You have a strong personal attachment to art. Why is that so?
Life without art feels dull.
I grew up in a community that lacked diversity. I spent a lot of time trying to fit in which made it hard to carve out my own identity.
But art has always been the one thing that feels undeniably mine. It’s where I find my true self, where I create something uniquely “me” that no one else can replicate. That’s why it’s so precious to me.
Where do you draw inspiration for your art?
Moments that evoke a deep memory or feeling, whether it’s a vivid snapshot of an experience or an abstract reflection of dreams and ambitions.
I aim to capture emotions in a way that is personal yet universal.

What is the hardest part of what you do?
The hardest part of what I do is wanting to give my art 100%. Balancing art with a full-time job, training six days a week, and maintaining relationships makes it tough.
Creating art can be inconsistent because life pulls me in so many directions, and honestly, I’m tired a lot of the time.
Thoughts on creative burnout?
Creative burnout is real, and it hits hard.
I tend to rush through life at a million miles an hour. I’ve realised how crucial it is to prioritise my mental health.

I give myself permission to take breaks—whether that means pulling a sickie, skipping a day at the gym, or just laying in the sun for a couple of hours while listening to a silly podcast.
It’s all about recharging and taking a moment to breathe.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
- Remember that it’s not about fitting in. It’s about finding your unique voice and being true to it.
- Don’t shy away from your creativity—let it flourish, even if it feels messy or uncertain at first.
Please tell us your dream for jess lei art and for your personal life :)
My dream for Jess Lei Art is to eventually leave my corporate job once I’ve climbed as high as I can—haha!
I want to open a little wine bar where I can also sell my art and unique trinkets. Perhaps somewhere overseas or in a charming rural area of Australia.
